Classmate Critique

Writer's picture: Julia ChemerinskiJulia Chemerinski

After finishing our first drafts of our magazines, we were told to seek the critiques of our classmates to see which areas were fine as is, and which could use some improvement.

Everyone I asked stated that the second version for the Double Page Spread, Cover, and Table of contents were better than the first versions, so I will not use version one for any of those. Upon asking my peers, many said that they loved the photos I used, but I could use more in my Double Page Spread. They all also liked how I formated my Table of Contents, but said I had to put page numbers, which I had forgotten on my Table of Contents and also on my Double Page Spread. My teacher, Ms. Ratliff, said that she loved how I phrased my article and article summaries on my Table of Contents, but that I had made a few typos and to double check it. She also made me aware that I was insensitive in using the term "bipolar" to describe Miami's weather, which I hadn't realized until she pointed it out. I completely agree with this, as it could be offensive to those who struggle with Bipolar Disorder. A friend and classmate also stated that my cover looked as if it "had been made on Instagram" because I used a font similar to what the app has.

I'm going to put more photos on my Double Page Spread. Although I'm not too sure how I'm going to format it, I'm going to try and find a way to make it look nice but still include related photos. Also, I will correct my mistake of not including page numbers, and do so immediately. I'm going to place them on the bottom righthand corner of each page. I will also read my writing carefully, and make sure I correct any typos or errors in capitalization or punctuation. I will change the word "bipolar" to "unpredictable." Finally, i will change the font on the cover page to make sure people don't think it was made on Instagram.

This is my magazine before the changes:
